Air-cooled water chillers are part of the Frigo Plus “Smart & Natural Cooling” product program. The units are used for indirect cooling, meaning they cool an auxiliary heat-transfer medium, which is then distributed throughout the facility. The heat-transfer medium can be water or a water-glycol mixture. In practice, these units are often referred to as air-to-water chillers, since ambient air is used to cool the refrigerant, which then cools the water.

Frigo Plus manufactures multiple series of air-cooled water chillers. They are categorized by cooling capacity, ranging from small units of a few kW to the largest systems with cooling capacities above 1000 kW. Frigo Plus chillers use the natural refrigerant R290 (propane) with an extremely low global warming potential GWP < 1. For low-temperature operation (below -5 °C), the natural refrigerant R1270 (propylene) can be used, also with an extremely low global warming potential GWP << 1. These natural refrigerants have zero ozone depletion potential (ODP = 0). Accordingly, they are exempt from restrictions prescribed by F-Gas regulation, i.e. Regulation (EU) 2024/573 on fluorinated greenhouse gases.
